Mold abatement is the controlled removal and containment of mold-contaminated material from a building. In practice the Canadian remediation industry uses “abatement” and “remediation” interchangeably for mold work — both describe isolating the area, removing what cannot be restored, treating what can, and correcting the moisture source.

For practical purposes, yes. “Abatement” is borrowed from asbestos and lead work, where it carries a specific regulatory meaning. Applied to mold it describes the same scope a remediation contractor performs. ASM does not price the two differently because they are not different work.

No, and this is the most common confusion. Asbestos abatement is a separately regulated activity in Ontario with its own licensing, notification and disposal requirements. ASM provides mold remediation, not asbestos abatement. If an inspection suggests asbestos-containing material is present, the correct step is a licensed asbestos contractor before mold work continues.

Cost is driven by affected area, whether porous materials must be removed, access and containment requirements, drying needs and the repair required to stop the moisture. Small contained work often begins in the hundreds; attic, basement or multi-material projects commonly reach several thousand. ASM provides a written scope after a free inspection rather than a figure from a photograph.

Health Canada treats a single patch larger than roughly three square metres as a large area warranting professional assessment and cleanup. Below that, a small surface patch on non-porous material may be manageable with proper protection — but recurring growth, hidden moisture, contaminated porous material or anyone in the home with respiratory sensitivity all point toward professional handling.
